Outlaw country is a new subgenre of country that emerges in the 70’s mainly out of Texas, Georgia, and Alabama. It comes as a response to the clean cut nashville dominance in the genre.

What is Austin City Limits?
Austin City Limits is an American live music television program recorded and produced by Austin PBS. Austin is center for country that does not conform to the Nashville sound, they focus on a lot of crossovers.
Who is Waylon Jennings?
Outlaw country artist from Texas. Career with RCA out of Nasvhille. He came up in Hillbilly Central. He was lonesome, on’ry, and mean.Traditional, ironic and authenticity songs.
Who is Willie Nelson?
Singer/Songwriter from Texas who got his career started in Nashville 1960. He sang on the Opry on a regular basis. 1971 moves to Texas with a new label. Played a lot of music festivals and eventually started his own called the Outlaw Music festival. He has a level of freedom like never seen before and makes whatever genre he wants
Later joined super group “Highwaymen” with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Democratic social politics and he donates a lot to farms.
What is Southern Rock?
Sub genre of country music that uses a pared down rock ensemble. Straight forward blues styles with virtuosic jams especially on the electric guitar.
There is a range of cultural identity with little to no artist crossover from country rock to country. The politics more center left.
Who is Charlie Daniels?
He was a Country and rock musician in California and Nashville. Famous for the Devil went down to Georgia.
Very Far right politics. He has traditional country, folk and southern rock influences.
Who is Hank Williams jr.?
Son of Hank Williams. He started his career by playing his father’s show. Later starts playing Southern Rock and Country Rock. He is known for playing political and cultural anthems and for his iconic rebel identity.
What is Countrypolitan?
A sub genre of country music, a development of the Nashville sound, produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s, containing elements of popular music, including electric piano, subdivisions/grooves and more harmonic complexity. Added elements of disco and pop.More middle class and suburban fan-base.
What did Reaganism do for country music?
Reaganism caused a resurgance of conservative ideals in country music. Merle Haggard campaigned for Reagan.

Honly-Tonk that was marketed for middle class suburban country fans. Referred to “Country Discos” Larger in size.

Merle Haggard wrote the theme song fro Dukes of Hazard. TV show “Dallas”. Movies: Nashville, Urban Cowboy, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Pure Country.

Who was Barbara Mandell?
Musician from Texas from a Musical family. Started by playing steel guitar in a honky-tonk/traditional country band with her family and signed to Columbia records before transitioning to countrypolitan and signing to Dot records with Tom Collins. She got in a car accident in 1984 and had a “come to jesus” moment and transitioned back to trad country. Now she is a part of the senior country community.
Who is Alabama?
Southern family country rock band. They had a strong country identity with southern and working class themes. 21 straight #1s.
Who was Ronnie Milsap?
Blind countrypolitan artist from North Carolina. Started as a Rock and R&B studio keyboardist. Switched to country in 19070s and countrypolitan in 1980’s. Inducted to HOF in 2014 and now a part of the Senior Country Music Community.
Who is Kenny Rogers?
Working class artist from Texas. Started by playing lots of genres started playing classic country in 70’s and countrypolitan in 80’s . HOF in 2013 and had many mega hits. He was a great storyteller. Also had an acting career.

Evolved in later 60’s as more young rock musicians- many of whom had also played in bluegrass bands- turned to country music as a means of connecting with their musical roots.

Bluegrass Meets Folk
Folk was a northern and upperclass modern and progressive genre. Women’s rights movement. The mixing of two worlds was not smooth. Younger country fans accepted the change but not older ones.
