When knurling on a lathe, the spindle speed and feed should be set to:
- fast speed, high feed
- slow speed, low feed
- fast speed, low feed
- slow speed, high feed
- slow speed, high feed
Three reasons why knurling is done on a workpiece:

- increase diameter, appearance, and provide a gripping surface.
- to cover up errors of a part, for tool handles, and press fits.
- none of the above
- increase diameter, appearance, and provide a gripping surface.

Finishing
For a lathe toolbit to cut efficiently, the tool must be set to the centre of:
- the bed axis
- the chuck axis

When the work piece must be held accurately, use a:
- a drive plate
- a universal chuck
- a four jaw chuck
- a three jaw chuck
- a four jaw chuck
A face plate is:
- used for round work
- used with couterweights
- used for pipe work
- drives a lathe dog
- used with counterweights.
A faceplate is a large disc that may be attached to the lathe spindle nose. It is similar to a drive plate, but is larger. Faceplates are used to hold oddly shaped workpieces that cannot be held in a chuck or between centres.
A workpiece is clamped to the surface of the faceplate with a combination of bolts, straps, step blocks and angle plates, depending on the shape of the workpiece. There are slots and holes in the faceplate to accommodate the bolts.
A faceplate setup must be balanced. If it is not, the lathe will vibrate, causing poor surface finish and loss of accuracy. It can even be very hazardous to the machine and operator if the spindle speed is set too high. Counterbalances must be used on a faceplate setup when balancing is required.
When fastening a very heavy workpiece to a faceplate, it is easier to remove the faceplate from the lathe and set it on a horizontal surface. Then, set the workpiece on the faceplate and fasten it in place.
A tapered pin has a _____ taper.
- 1/8” TPF
