Noun
Person, place, thing, idea, concept, or quality.
Proper noun
Specific I person, place, or thing
Common noun
General person, place, or thing
Pronouns
Replace the noun (I, he, she, you, it, we they, their, ours, his, hers, its)
Both nouns and pronouns:
Function as subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, objects of prepositions, appositives, and complements
Verbs
Express action, state of being, or condition
Action verbs
Express obvious action and give the sentence life
Linking verbs
Express a condition or state of being (is, be, were, was)
Adjectives
Describe nouns and pronouns by limiting or making more specific the noun or pronoun.
- what kind, how many, which one…
- can proceed a noun or follow a linking verb
Articles
Indefinite (a, an) and definite (the)
Adverbs
Modifiers of adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs
- how, when, where, why, in what manner, and to what extent
- end in ly
Prepositions
Connecting words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence
- used in phrases
- at, on, after, before, between, off, into
Prepositional phrases
Contain an object
- after the meeting, to the airport, over the fence, across the ditch, with her crew
Conjunctions
Words that join words, phrases, or clauses
- and, but, or, nor
Interjections
Words used alone that express and extremely stron feeling. Followed by exclaimation point
- wow, oops, wait!
Present tense
Show an action happening now
- something that is always true
Past tense
Indicate action that has already been completed
Future tense
Indicates action that is to take place in the future
Present perfect
Shows that an action began in the past and may still be occurring (has redecorated)
Past perfect tense
Shows which of two past actions occurred first (had signed and received)
Future perfect tense
Shows that an action will be completed by some specific time in the future (will have completed)
Present progressive tense
Describes an action that is in progress in the present (you are reading)
Past progressive tense
Describes an action that was in progress at a certain time in the past (they were assessing)
