Quiz 2 Flashcards
What are the Major Selection Pressures?
Food
Predators
Finding a mate
Disease (pathogens)
What is an arms race?
Primates and plants evolved in an arms race, meaning they co-evolved together and developed adaptations against each other. Plants developed defense mechanisms to avoid being eaten by primates, and primates developed adaptations to overcome these defenses and eat them. (ex: bamboo lemurs and cyanide)
Theory of the Selfish Herd (Hamilton)
Primates stay in large groups (despite more feeding competition) because having more individuals between them and a predator reduces their risk of being attacked
Male Philopatry & Female Philopatry
Male Philopatry: males remain in their natal group, females leave the group at sexual maturity looking for unrelated males to mate with. (ex: chimps, spider monkeys)
Female Philopatry: females remain in their natal group, males leave the group at sexual maturity looking for unrelated females to mate with. (ex: baboons, macaques)
