Quiz 2 Flashcards
Why is diversity important?
- for the health of the biosphere
- the more diverse the ecosystem is the greater its stability
- provides many options and alternatives
- there are 30 million species of insects alone
Why do we classify?
- To understand the diversity of living things
- To help group things in an organized way
- Provides specific details to help identify organisms
What does taxonomy mean?
- To help identify organisms
- to represent relationships between organisms.
Early Taxonomy
Aristotle proposed that living organisms be arranged in hierarchical order.
Simple organisms at the bottom and advanced organisms at the top.
Who was Carl Linnaeus
System based on physical and structural features
Believed that the more features that are common between two organisms the closer they are related.
How are living things classified
Based on hierarchy of groups called taxa (plural) or taxon (singular)
Domains –> largest/ most general taxa
Species –> smallest taxa
What is a taxonomist?
Someone who classifies
What is the order of classification levels?
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
Characteristics become more similar as you move down
The smaller the taxon the more similar the organisms are within it.
What is an acronym that can be used to remember the order of classification levels?
King Philip’s Cat Ordered Fresh Greek Salad
What are the different Kingdoms
Plantae Animalia Protista Fungi Archaebacteria
How are organisms named?
Binomial Nomenclature
Used for naming organisms by two names referred to as the scientific name.
Originate from latin or greek words
Based on characteristics
How do you use the binomial system?
Genus is the first part of the name
-refers to a group of organisms that are closely related and have similar characteristics
Species is the second part
- referes to a group of organisms that look alike and can interbreed in nature
- produces infertile offspring
Scientific name can also be written as the first letter of the genus followed by the species.
How does a dichotomous key work?
go through a series o choices that lead to the identification
at each step two alternative choices are provided:
the choice made determines what step to go to next
this continues until the identification has been made
What is a dichotomous key?
a device that can be used to easily identify an unknown organism
organisms are divided into smaller and smaller groups
only two choices can be presented at each level
There are more than ___ types of cancer.
