Quiz 2 Flashcards
Function of vital substances
Balance quality and flow determine life and health
Shen
Mind, spirit. Essence and Qi are considered to be the material foundation of Shen
Three treasures in Taoism
Qi, Essence and Shen are considered to be the three fundamental physical and psychic substances of the human being
Qi
Formed after birth, energy like, is everywhere, easily replenished, moves and changes moment to moment
Two aspects of Qi
- especially relevant to medicine
- energy manifests simultaneously on the physical and spiritual level
When Qi condenses
Energy transforms and accumulates into physical shape
- Qi changes form according to locality and function
Pre-heaven Qi
One type of Qi origin
- stored in kidneys
- determines basic constitutional make up (genes)
- essential for growth
- used throughout life
- preserved by living in balance
Post-heaven Qi
Type of Qi origin
- derived from food and air
- spleen and stomach are the Root
- supported by pre heaven Qi
Gu Qi
Grain Qi, derived from the food and fluids consumed, organ related is the spleen
Da Qi
Cosmic Qi, derived from the air we breathe, main organ related is the lung
Ancestral Qi: Gathering Qi: Zong Qi: Qi of the chest: Pectoral Qi
When Da Qi and Gu Qi mix together
Function of Ancestral Qi
- Controls speech and throat, strength of voice
- nourishes heart and lung
- assists the lung and heart to push the Qi and blood
- resides in the chest “sea of Qi”
Yuan Qi
Catalyst that helps to transform ancestral Qi to true Qi
- pre natal Qi that circulates in the channels
True Qi (2 forms)
- Zhen Qi, the Qi that fills and nourishes the body
- assumes two forms Ying Qi and Wei Qi
Ying Qi
Nourishing Qi
- this Qi is closely related to blood and flows with it in the vessel and channels
- nourishes the internal organs, whole body
Wei Qi
Defensive Qi
- protects the body from enter your pathogenic effects
- warms, regulates body temp
- regulates sweat by opening and closing pores
- under control of the lungs
Organ Qi
Zang(yin) & Fu(yang) organs, which nourishes the organs and helps their healthy function
Functions of Qi
1. Qi is the source of all movement 2. Protects the body 3. Source of transformation in the body 4. Holds bodies substances and organs 5. Warms the body
Four pathogens/disharmony of Qi
- can be deficient, can be caused by illness, old age
- can collapse, advance stage of deficiency
- can stagnate, cause symptoms like pain
- can be rebellious, counter flow from its normal direction
Functions of blood
- nourish, compliment action of Qi
- moistens, ensures tissues don’t dry out
- houses and roots the Shen, provides the material foundation for the mind
Vital Substances (5)
- basic elements of all physiological activity
1 Shen 2 Qi 3 Blood
4 Essence 5 Body fluids; all are manifestations of Qi in varying degrees
Blood and Qi relationship
- Qi generates blood, Qi is the commander of blood
- Qi moves blood
- Qi contains blood within the vessels
- blood nourishes Qi, blood is the mother of Qi
Body fluids
Fluids consists of all fluids within the body. Source of the body fluids comes from the assimilation of food and fluids, this is done by the spleen
Jin
Thin fluids - clear and watery, mostly found in surface flesh. Sweat and urine are also part
Ye
Thick fluids, they are turbid and viscous primer sly found in the Bowles, Brian, bones, and viscera, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid
3 body fluid functions
- Moistens: keeps organs, muscles, skin moist
- lubricates: joints, viscera
- nourishes: Brian marrow, bones
Two pathogens of body fluids
Deficiency of body fluids: due to excess heat, sweating & profuse urination, vomiting.
Accumulation: edema, phlegm, congested, excess
Jing
Substance of refinement and distillation.
Essence
From parents, fluid like, resides mostly in the kidneys, replenishes with great difficulty, changes slowly and gradually
Function of essence
- Growth of bones, hair, teeth & sexual maturation
- reproduction: conception and pregnancy
- development
Kidney essence
Derives from both pre and post heaven essence, produce marrow, protects against exterior pathogenic factors
Disharmonies of essence
- prenatal essence am an not be influenced during the course of adult life
- improper maturation
- sexual dysfunction
- infertility
- premature aging
How to make essence better
Living a balanced life style, diet & find a balance between work and rest, exercises like tai chi, yoga, breathing techniques
Shen
Mind and spirit
- mind most immaterial
- essence+Qi are healthy=mind is happy&healthy
- mind gives indication of the emotion and mental life
- state of mind can be observed through the eyes
Function of Shen
Think and discriminate, show the force of human personality
Disharmony of Shen
Lack luster in the eyes, muddled thinking, forgetfulness, insomnia
Functions of the channels
1-transporting, Qi and blood throughout the body, make the body whole
2-protecting, against pathogens
3-respond to dysfunction in the body
When disharmony disrupts the body the channels respond in a number of ways:
1-disease of channels cause impaired flow, malnourishment
2-disease in ZangFu reflected in channels
3-disease transmitted via channels
4-channel visibly show signs through discoloration
* can be regulated by stimulation of points
Cutaneous regions
12-six jiao
- regions link superficial channels
- used in diagnosing interior disorders of channels
- allow for treatment applied at skin level ex: massage, cupping, moxa
Minute collaterals
Small vessels, branch off from superficial connecting vessels
-serve to supply Qi and blood to the surface or where channels can’t travel
Tendino-muscle (sinew) channels
- 12 channels named/reflect after the primary
- function of these channels is to bind bones and move joints
- originate on extremities(finger/toes) & ascend to head and trunk
Tendino-muscle (sinew) channels DONT
- not responsible for transport of Qi
- no points
Lou connecting channels
-15 channels, branch out from the 12 primary plus one each from conception & governing vessel & the great Lou-connecting channel of the spleen
Lou connecting channels function
Strengthen connection between yin and yang pairs
Primary channels are paired in two ways
Each yin channel is paired with its corresponding yang channel
- interior yin
- exterior yang
Channel also paired with channel in arm + leg relationship
12 divergent channels
- branch off 12 primary channels
- go deep
- distribute Qi and blood to head and face
- divergent channels don’t have their own acupuncture points
8 extraordinary vessels
- absorb excessive Qi and blood from the primary channels
- link and regulate the flow of Qi
- protect the body
The conception vessel and governing vessel are the only extraordinary vessels that have their own points
The conception vessel and governing vessel are the only extraordinary vessels that have their own points
Tsun - cun
-measurement
-4 fingers = 3 tsun
-2 fingers = 1 1/2 tsun
Always done with the clients hand
Gall bladder
Both a yang organ & extraordinary organ
Yuan points
Organ points
- all 12 channels have one
- located in limbs
- paired with Lou points
Lou points
- 15 point s
- located on limbs
- treats disorders involving two yang yin related channel
Xi -cleft / accumulating points
- all 12 have one
- located on limbs
- treats acute disorders of zang fu
- useful in treating bleeding in organ
Back-shu/ yu points
- down the back
- all 12 have one
- useful for chronic disorder of organ
Eight influential /. Gathering points
Zang, fu, Qi, blood, tendon, vessels, bone, marrow
Five shu/ transporting points
- each channel 5 points
- located between toes knees elbows fingers
- each type of point treat group of common symptoms
