What are mucoceles? What causes them to form?
soft cyst, mucin-filled cavity with mucous glands lining the epithelium common on lips and under tongue- ranula caused by minor injury to the minor labial or sublingual salivary glands by trauma
Describe a mucocele’s appearance.
thick, mucus like saliva is produced by the damaged gland and creates a buggle that is clear or blueish about 1-2cam, is movable, cystic, and may rupture
What is Chelitis and what can cause it?
Erytema and scaling of the lips (chapped lips) cause by use of retinoids, wind-burn, allergies, chronic lip licking
Describe angular chelitis and what causes it.
Deep cracks at labial corner, can split and bleed forming ulcers, often bilateral caused by: ill-fitting dentures, changing bite, sicca, poor oral hygieve, nutritional deficiencies, allergic reactions
At what point in time should a solitary lesion be biopsied for malignancy?
after two weeks
What is the appearance of oral lichen planus?
lace-like white patches/streaks on buccal mucosa, not contagious, not painful
What can cause oral lichen planus?
unknown. possible drug reaction, Hep C, worse with stress. can increase risk for oral cancer
Describe the appearance of Leukoplakia
white patches or plaque on the oral mucosa that CAN’t be rubbed off located all over mouth, esp tongue, mandibular alveolar ridge and buccal mucosa looks like flaking white paint
