QUIZ 2 Flashcards
SPOROPOLLENIN
encases spores and pollen / helps resist dry outs in land plants
Non-vascular plant
lack xylen and structures needed for water to overcome gravity. need direct contact with water.
vascular plant
has xylen. structured to overcome gravity. no need to be in touch with water to survive. plants own irrigation system.
seed
is an embryo surrounded by coat and cotyledon (food supply) produced by ovary. plant can be spread far away from parent.
fruit
its is the mature ovary after fertalization.an embryo/seed surrounded by tissue that protects it. is ripened from an angiosperm. protects seed and aids with dispersal.
ovary
female reproductive organ where the pollen is deposited to produce embryo=seed/fruit. known as carpel.
each ovule contains a megasporangium houses/produces ( 2n) cell called megasporocyte.
angiosperm
flowering plant. seed encapsuled by fruit (mature ovary fertilized). gametophyte (produce haploid cells). plant is either female/male mega/micro
gymnosperm
asexual plant (has both reproductive organs) produces seeds. first they are sporophytes (2n). produce haploids through mitosis (not meiosis).
conifer
pines and redwoods. seed producing plants. have both sexual organs=sporophytes. wind pollination. needle like leaves.
stomata
the conducts in plant leaves that allow direct flow of gases( co2 in for photosynthesis and o and h20 exit) they are surrounded by guard cell that open and close to prevent water lost. pore its the actual opening.
cuticle
waxy sheet that prevents water lost by evaporation.
lignin
polymer. vascular tissue (in cell walls vascular plants) provides upright support.
tracheid
found in vascular plants. long tapering cells. contain secondary wall made of lignin (polymer that helps with support) and primary cell wall made up cellulose.
vascular elements
xylem (tracheids–> ligning)
bryophyte
non-vascular plants (mosses). life cyle= gametophytes (either female/male plant). spores through air. eggs through water.
