Quiz 2 Flashcards
What is the purpose of border molding
Allows you to get a functional impression of the vestibule
__ displace the soft tissue in the vestibule making it appear deeper than it is
Primary impressions
Border molding captures the __ of the vestibule that occurs during movement
depth and shape
Prevents the denture from being overextended no matter how the patient moves during function
border molding
Border molding prevents the master impression from being __ of the depth of the vestibule
“short”
Melts wax in a very controlled area
Use ethanol as fuel
Hanau Torch
Set water bath temp to
130 degrees
Prior to border molding, cover the dentoform with a thin layer of
lubricant/ KY Jelly/ Vaseline
Hold green stick compound __ the flame to melt it, not __ or it will catch fire or turn black
above
IN the flame
Do you border mold everything at once or small sections at a time
Small sections at a time
Place molten green stick compound on tray.
Re-melt compound on tray with Hanau Torch.
Quench tray with molten compound in __ then seat completely on dentoform
water bath for 4-5 seconds
Difference between border molding in the lab vs in the clinic
With a patient you would immediately do border molding movements to shape functional impression (Instead of putting into a water bath)
Seat tray until __
tissue stops are engaged
(This enures the same repeatable position of the custom tray each time it is removed and placed)
Any compound on the interior portion of the tray (the __) must be removed leaving only that filling the vestibule beyond the tray
intaglio
__ must be applied to the trays prior to making the impression
PVS Tray Adhesive
The adhesive should be applied in a very thin layer, and __ prior to making a PVS impression
dried
IMPORTANT! = apply a very thin layer of __ to the dentoform prior to making the impression - DO NOT use __ for this step, as it is too thick and will distort the impression
KY jelly
vaseline
__ is used at ULSD for complete denture impressions
Aquasil Ultra Monophase Regular Set (polyVinylSiloxane)
Setting time for Aquasil Ultra Monophase Regular Set =__ (takes less time intraorally on a patient)
8 minutes from start of mix in lab
The aquasil cylinder is placed in the __ (Pentamix3 Impression Mixer/Dispenser)
Pentamix
The blue retainer is screwed onto the cylinder to hold the mixing tip in place
A new disposable mixing tip must be placed __
prior to each mix
When you are ready to make the impression a __ will dispense the aquasil and fill your tray
faculty member
Features of a good impression
Smooth well-defined peripheries
Maximum extension
Even pressure distribution
(The underlying tray or compounds should not show through)
There should be intimate tissue contact
If green stick is too stiff it can cause many problems
Vestibule not recorded correctly, could be too short and not capture it or too long and distort it.
May not capture the frenna
Could still look rounded and not be accurate
Border molding done correctly will enable us to get a better impression with less chance of
voids
Where are the 4 areas/small sections we place the green compound stick to border mold
buccal frenum back on both sides (2)
labial
Posterior palatal seal area
After compound stick is applied we __
wet fingers in the bath and build it up to the periphery
Torch to superheat and make soft
Then water bath
Then in Mouth
For the section of border molding done on the posterior palatal seal it is important to -
place on the tissue area of the tray not extend the tray further back
