1967 UVA proposed grant wishing to establish a program to help newly arrived African American students adjust to the university Applied to the Rockefeller foundation Refused Student Coalition put forward the Transition Program as critical With the help of faculty, raised money 1969 Hesitant support from Board of Visitors Established 7-10 weeks of instruction in learnings like english, math, and foreign languages Created by Bill Elwood Professor of English at the University Criticised as being a lot of busy work Poor study materials (6th grade textbooks) No good reason for the selection process Was it for African American students but there were white kids so what was the point No clear goal Students were confused and frustrated for why they had to spend 7 weeks of their summer on bullshit Had some great minds go through the program Valerie Smith, now president of Swarthmore Advantages Did help black students create bonds before the semester really kicked off
