quiz 2 Flashcards
avg velocity equation
avg velocity = change in position / time elapsed
f(b) - f(a) / b -a
how do you find the slope of the secant line given a point on the curve?
- find values of x that are close to x value from both left and right side
- plug into calc using alpha trace enter
(Y1 (close x- value) - Y1 (given x value) / (close x value - given x value)
- find the value of the slope of the tangent line to curve (its the x value that the points are approaching
- using the slope, create an equation using point slope form
tangent line vs secant line
tangent line hits the curve only once, whereas secant line hits the curve twice
distance formula
distance = rate x time
find “instantaneous velocity” vs. “avg velocity”
instantaneous velocity -> slope of the tangent line
avg. velocity -> slope of the secant line
Horizontal Line Test
If graph passes horizontal line test, that means it’s a one to one function, and therefore has an inverse function
Exponential function growth and decay
f (x) = b ^ x
- when b > 1, graph shows increasing function called exponential growth curve
- when b < 1, graph shows decreasing function called exponential decay curve
the sine function
goes in increments of 0, π/2, 3π/2, and 2π, up and down to 1 and -1
middle, high, middle, low, middle
Cosine graph
goes in increments of 0, π/2, 3π/2, and 2π, up and down to 1 and -1
starts high, middle, low, middle, high
