Quiz Flashcards
Define Tier 2
Conditions do not match the assumptions created in generic guidelines, adjustments are required
Define Tier 1
Comparison against generic guidelines or criteria, the criteria for allowable contaminant concentrations are developed using a series of assumptions about sites that are used for different types of land.
Define Tier 3
Site specific risk assessment is required
Tier 1 Guidelines
Conduct sampling on site
Identify site specific contaminants
Explain lateral and vertical extent of contaminants
Compare contaminant concentrations to guidelines
Different categories of land use
Agricultural Residential/parkland Commercial Industrial Natural
Three main types of remediation approaches?
Excavation
Containment
Treatment
How are NAPL’s removed by excavation?
Pumping
True or false? A contaminated material cannot be placed back after it’s been treated?
False!
Define containment
Used to prevent the migration of contaminants from the site to other areas
What are some methods that can be used as treatment?
In situ
Ex situ
Define Phytoremediation
Plants are used to remove, neutralize or contain contaminants
List the three main categories of Phytoremediation?
Phytoextraction
Phytostabilization
Phytovolatilization
Describe the process of photoextraction
Plants are used to extract materials from the soil, transport the materials out of the soil, and into above ground physical structures of the plant. Harmful materials can then be removed from the site by harvesting the plant.
What is the goal of Phytostabilization?
To stabilize the contaminated site by reducing the mobility and bioavailability of contaminants.
What is Phytovolatilization?
Materials are extracted through the roots of plants and volatilized.
