Quiz 1: rock terms Flashcards
Define extrusive
rock that has cooled rapidly above the earth’s crust forming small crystals
Define intrusive
rock that has cooled slowly underneath the crust, forming large crystals
Define phenocryst
relatively large crystal within a fine-grained groundmass of porphyritic rock
Define porphyritic
rock composed of large crystals (phenocrysts) set in ground mass (fine grained material)
Define phaneritic
rock composed predominantly of crystals visible to naked eye, commonly intrusive eg granite
Define holocrystalline
rock composed completely of glass
Define hypocrystalline
rock is partly crystals and partly glass
Define Holohyaline
Rock is totally glass
Define glomeroporphyritic
aggregates of phenocrysts
Define aphanitic
crystalline components not visible to the naked eye
Define pegmatitic
exceptionally coarsely crystalline, crystals bigger than 25mm
Define pumiceous
large number of vesicles giving a sponge or frothy appearance to a silicate rock
Define fluidal
wavy patterns with elongated minerals parallel to the flow direction
Define euhedral
well developed crystals
Define subhedral
some of the crystal faces are well developed
