What is graphic design?
It’s communicating by giving ideas a visual form so others can understand them.
Elements of design
They are the basic units of a visual image. They include colour, imagery, symbols and materials.
Design categories
Websites, ads, branding, infographics, posters, book design, brochures, billboards.
Websites
A collection of files and resources accessible through the WWW and organized under a particular domain name.
Advertisements
A form of marketing communication used to persuade an audience to take action.
Branding
It is the promoting of a product or service by identifying it with a particular brand.
Infographics
Graphic visual representations of data
Posters
Public piece of paper conveying information
Book design
Incorporating the elements of graphic design into a book
Brochures
An informative paper document that can be folded into a flyer
Billboards
A specialized medium in which multimedia content is displayed in public
Typeface
the top level of a family of text (i.e. Helvetica).
Typestyle
styles in a subset of the Typeface family (i.e. Helvetica Bold).
Font
text that has a chosen typeface,
typestyle and has other modifications applied to it
Picas
They are used to represent fixed horizontal measurements. There are 6 picas per inch.
Points
The smallest whole unit of measure in typography.
Leading
the distance between the baselines of successive lines in a paragraph
Kerning
Adjusting the spacing between two individual characters
Tracking
adjusting space between multiple letters and words
Type Alignment
Left, right, justified and centred.
Text type
designed to be legible and readable at small sizes (8-12pt) in a large body of text
Display Type
designed to be more stylish look with larger-sized (14pt or larger) text
