Seven Lamps of Architecture

A

John Ruskin
7 lamps(important aspects of architecture)
- Sacrifice(money, labor, materials, etc)
- Truth(holding true to purpose of building, not painting over/disguising materials, not machine-making ornaments/wanted handmade)
- Power(size/proportion)
- Beauty(beauty in nature)
- Life(man-made is better than machine made, is all about the people who make and design buildings)
- Memory(recognizing history of building, didn’t like renovations/refurbishing, thinking about where buildings will be in the future)
- Obedience(following the trends of the time, all about style, making buildings “match” area they are in)
