Quiz 1 Flashcards
When elements of a system automatically adjust to coordinate their functioning
Accommodation
The power struggle at the beginning of therapy in which the patient desires to control the “structure” of therapy, including how the therapist will function, who will attend, when the appointment happens, etc., though the therapist must control the structure.
Battle for Structure
The idea that actions are related through a series of recursive loops or repeating cycles
Circular Causality
The reciprocity that is the defining feature of any relationship
Complementary
Common patterns of behavior and experience derived from settings in which people live.
Culture
Fogarty (1976) description of the person in the marital dyad that is likely to pull away when experiencing anxiety in order to maintain homeostasis in the relationship and invoke pursuit by the partner.
Distancer
The lack of energy or information in a system.
Entropy
The tendency for a family to resist change in order to maintain a steady state (or avoid change)
Family Homeostasis
The functional organization of families that determines how family members interact within the system and with larger systems.
Family Structure
The evidence-based model of therapy in which the therapist uncovers the function of the problem behavior as a manner of reframing the issue and decreasing blame.
Functional Family Therapy
The construct that describes a system’s tendency toward stability, or a steady-state
Homeostasis
A directive given to an individual or subsystem designed to promote a desirable behavior through a possible problematic means (couple must “sneak away” together, child must hide responsible behavior from parents)
Invariant Prescription
Communication about the subject of communicating which is covert and often unnoticed in communication
Metacommunication
An intensive, crisis-oriented form of family therapy developed by Robert MacGregor; family members are treated in various subgroups by a team of therapists.
Multiple Impact Therapy
Assisting families in crisis by gathering the whole family, friends, employers, etc., or what might be called the “suprasystem”.
Network Therapy
