Q

Digestion v. Absorption

A

Digestion breaks food into smaller pieces (mechanical is chewing food, chemical is saliva has enzymes that break down starches). Absorption is getting the smallest molecules of food across the intestinal wall and into the blood stream. This allows nutrients to get to different parts of the body.

Q

Mouth

A

Healthy teeth and gums helps us chew well

Tongue helps us swallow food down

We make 3 pints of saliva daily, contains amalyase that breaks apart carbs.

Q

Esophagus

A

Heartburn or reflux happens when the bottom of the tube gets irritated, where it connects to the stomach.
Treatment for reflux is a little apple cider vinegar before each meal, increase HCl acid in stomach which closes sphincter at top of stomach.
Also can be helped by gently tugging stomach down, if person has hiatal hernia where top of stomach is pushed up and gets stuck above the diaphragm.

Q

Stomach

A

Muscular hollow bag filled with HCl acid that squishes your food into smaller peices using a contraction from top to bottom.

Lined with mucilagenous coating to protect the wall from the very caustic Hydrochloric acid.
Stress causes decreased coating → ulcers!

Secretes pepsin, an enzyme that breaks apart proteins.

Q

3 parts of small intestine

A

Doudenum - top 12 inches, just under where it connects to stomach, absorbs minerals

Jejunum - 8 feet long, absorbs water soluble vitamins, carbs, proteins

Q

Why do we poop?

A

The only thing we can’t digest is fiber (cellulose) = a type of starch in plants.

Undigestable, it draws water from blood stream into intestine, stretching the walls of intestine.
Muscular walls when stretched→ automatically contract and push food along tube→ pooping

Peristalsis = contraction of circular wall of intestine, natural cause of pooping.

17
Q

Ways to stimulate pooping

A
  1. Eat plenty of fiber containing foods such as fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains = BEST WAY
  2. Take Magnesium citrate - 250-500mg - this nutrient which helps muscle cramps, will cause osmotic diarrhea if taken above “bowel tolerance” (2nd best way)
  3. Irritate the lining of the intestine so much that it forcibly evacuates everything in there, just to stop the irritation. Commonly with Senna or other irritating herbs in laxative products. (worst)
18
Q

Liver

A

Makes bile which emulsifies/breaks down fats so we can absorb them through intestinal wall

Bile is stored in gallbladder. When we taste fat, the gallbladder contracts and squirts bile into intestine.

Liver detoxes EVERYTHING we eat, drink, breath, take as medicine, food etc.

19
Q

pancreatic insufficiency

A

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition that occurs when the pancreas fails to provide the necessary amount of digestive enzymes. Due to a lack of these enzymes, people with EPI cannot properly digest the nutrients in food such as fats, proteins, and carbohydrates (maldigestion).

20
Q

Maldigestion

A

A condition that prevents absorption of nutrients through the small intestine.
