Quiz 1 Flashcards
6 critical concepts of SPED at PSU
Scaffolding Instruction Collaboration and Teaming Individualization Data-Based Decision Making Inclusion and Diversity Leadership and Advocacy
Peer Reviewed Definition
A procedure in which each paper is submitted to a research journal and critiqued by several scientists who then submit their criticisms to an editor
Primary Source Definition
written by people who are carrying out the study, original articles, communicates the methods and results directly
Secondary Source Definition
reviews, summarizes or discusses research conducted by others
Experimental Design
investigators have control over 1 or more variable and manipulate 1 factor to see if it has an impact
2 necessary qualities of effective research
replication and pubic verifiability
convergence of evidence
when two or more independent sources point to the same conclusion
Operationism
the idea that concepts in scientific theories must in some way be grounded in, or linked to, observable events that can be measured.
Non- Experimental Design
no experimental manipulation or control of factors that may influence subjects
Randomized Control Trial
Studies that randomly assign individuals to an intervention or control group, in order to measure effects of the intervention
Single Subject Design
Experiment with a single person or a few individuals, uses a baseline as a “control”, useful when attempting to change behavior
Describe the Falsifiability Criterion
In order for a theory to be acknowledged as true it must have the ability to be disproven. In order to be a testable theory, it must have implications for actual events in the natural world
Systematic Empiricism
tructured observation of the natural world, usually theory driven
What is Operational Definition?
Removes the concept from the feelings/intuitions of a particular individual and allows it to be tested by anyone who can carry out the measurable operations…. translates a concept to a measurement
Reliability
consistency of a measuring instrument; whether you would arrive at the same measurement is you measured the same construct several times
Validity
whether an instrument is measuring what it is supposed to be measuring
5 stages of Teaching and Learning:
Acquisition Fluency Maintenance Generalization Adaptation
Acquisition
students ability to preform a newly learned skill
Fluency
The rate at which students accurately preform a response
Maintenence
Student is able to recall and use the skill
Generalization
Student can use skill in other contexts
Adaptation
Student modifies skill to apply in different contexts
5 big Ideas of Reading
Phonological Awareness Alphabetic Principle Fluency Comprehension Vocabulary
Phonological Awareness
sounds, students learn words are made up by smaller pieces
Alphabetic Principle
letter-sound correspondence, phonics
Fluency
blending letters to create words
Comprehension
ability to extract meaning from text
quantitative research
uses #s, measurements, deductive logic
qualitative research
This type of research “refers to the meanings, concepts definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and description of things”
convergence of evidence
when 2 or more independant sources point towards the same conclusion.
