Goals of classic psychoanalytic theory
A comprehensive theory of personality, worked to uncover the unconscious
Freud view of human nature

The ID

The pleasure principal
The ID is intolerant of tension, pain, or discomfort and seeks to avoid by pursuing pleasure and gratification
The superego
The opposite of the ID
Rigid conscience that internalizes rules and guidelines

Like superego becomes differentiated from the child
Evolves as baby realizes it’s seperate from its mother

Transference (classic psychoanalytic)
The client projects onto the therapist characteristics of another person, usually a parent, and reacts to the therapist as though he or she really does have those characteristics
Countertransference
A therapists natural response to a client, can help therapist to understand the client and provide a corrective experience
Differences between Freud and Adler
Heredity and upbringing are important but people’s own efforts to find meaning and success can be more powerful
Adler human nature
First five years are important
Not deterministic
Biology provides probabilities but the self intervenes
