Quiz 1 Flashcards
Def. of Chemistry
Study of matter and its properties, the changes that matter undergoes, and the energy associated with these changes.
What is matter?
Any substance that has mass and volume.
What is composition?
The types and amounts of simpler substances that make up a sample of matter (what makes up a substance).
What are properties?
The characteristics that give each substance a unique quality.
What are physical properties?
Properties a substance shows without interacting with another substance (i.e., melting pt., boiling pt., density).
What are chemical properties?
Properties a substance shows that do interact and often transform with other substances (i.e., flammability, corrosiveness (rust)).
Chemical vs. Physicial Change
Chemical- Changes composition and cannot be reversed
Physical- Solid, liquid, gas change and easily reserved
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Solid- has fixed shape and volume
Liquid- has a varying shape that takes the shape of its container
Gas- has no fixed shape or volume and conforms to the container it is in.
What is Potential Energy (PE)?
The energy due to the position of an object.
What is Kinetic Energy (KE)?
The energy due to the movement of an object.
Total Energy =
Potential + Kinetic
Lower Energy States
More stable
Higher Energy States
Less stable
Observations
Measured events; can be stated as a natural law if universally consistent.
Hypothesis
The question or tentative proposal that explains observations; the why.
