Quiz 1 Flashcards
The Rite of Spring
Igor Stravinsky
1913
Full orchestra
More filled with dissonances and expressive in scary, terrifying way, like dance
Petrushka
Igor Stravinsky
1910-1911
Full orchestra
lots of timpani and drumrolls. Generally more legato, with flute, woodwind, and cornet solos
Vers la Flamme, Op. 72 (Towards the Flame)
Alexander Scriabin
1914
Piano only
Slow moving in beginning, mostly just punchy dissonant chords with a mellow melody line hovering above. Picks up pace a bit towards end, with alternating dissonant pitches, with awkward, limping melody.
Jeaux d’eau (Fountains)
Maurice Ravel
1901
Piano only
Spraying notes in beautiful, harmonic melismas, like a fountain. Much less dissonance, and generally all quick moving.
Nocturnes, No. 1, Nuages (Clouds)
Claude Debussy
1899
Full orchestra
Distinctive oboe solos, harmonies kind of float around and don’t go anywhere, like clouds would move (sometimes swell and fall, mostly just hover)
Voiles (Veils/Sails)
Claude Debussy
1909
Piano only
Open harmonies, but don’t seem to move anywhere, similar to Nuages, but on only piano. Moderate tempo.
3 Sarabandes
Erik Satie
1887
Piano only
I - Moves in monorhythmic patterns - hands together. Somewhat dramatically expressive. Ambiguous chords, no leading tones. moderate - slow tempo
II - Also moves in monorhythm. Ambiguous chords, no leading tones. moderate - slow tempo
III - More long melismas stretched across multiple octaves, in single voice (hands play just descending melismas). Slow tempo.
Pour le piano: II. Sarabande
Claude Debussy
1901
Piano only
Moves mostly in monorhythm. Pretty melody outlined through many repetitions in A sections.
Salome
Richard Strauss
1896
Opera (full orchestra + voice)
The only piece with orchestra and voice!
Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Resurrection
Gustav Mahler
1888-1894
Full Orchestra
Clearly not a ballet, and seems to tell a narrative more so than “Nuages”. Very evocative themes.
