Naturalist art
will have imagery that resembles what we see in the world around us
Representational art
Art that presents nature, people and objects from the real world recognizably.
Idealized art
natural imagery is modified in a way that strives for perfection in terms of the values and aesthetics of a particular culture
Classical art
refers to art that is orderly, balanced, clear, and well proportioned vertically and horizontally
Abstract art
imagery may or may not be recognizable, but it will have been derived from reality, possibly distorted and enlarged
Nonobjective art
imagery will be completely generated by the artist containing nothing besides what the artist sees while creating the painting
Expressive art
will aim to communicate heightened emotions, a sense of urgency or spontaneity (bold and immediate)
Surreal art
will have an arrangement of images or materials bizarre and/or fantastic. surreal art may appear as if you’re tapping into the unconscious mind
Fine art
It is what is displayed in art museums; it has no use other than to be looked at and loved
The Raft of the Medusa is considered fine art.
Craft art
It’s more so the art of making objects rather than images. Craft may look very nice, but it was designed with a purpose other than to appeal to the eyes.
Formal elements
Like the elements of oral and written language, they are the basic units of visual arts which help you talk about what you think of art.
They are: light, line, color, value, texture, pattern, shape, volume, space, time and emotion.
Chiaroscuro
a term used to describe the light and dark gradations used to depict objects in space
Tenebrism
a style of painting especially associated with the Italian painter Caravaggio and his followers in which most of the figures are engulfed in shadow but some are dramatically illuminated by a beam of light usually from an identifiable source
Atmospheric Perspective Vs. Linear Perspective
Atmos gives the illusion of depth on a flat picture plane by the fuzzy handling of distant forms to make them seem far away, while Lin relies on parallel lines appearing to come together as they extend away from the foreground.
Principles of Composition
Composition, balance, rhythm, proportion, scale, emphasis, unity and variety are all what can be consciously used to compose beautiful works of art.
