Lower “arm” of AH
Stretches horizontally

Body of AH
Center third of AH
Level of LM16 to LM15

Tail of AH
Lower third of AH
LM15 to LM14

Tragus
Verticle “flap” which covers the opening to ear canal

Antitragus
L-shaped horizontal “flap” inferior to tail of Antihelix

Intertragic Notch
Curved “U” separating Tragus from Antitragus

Lobe
“U” shaped soft tissue at base of external ear
Scaphoid Fossa
Groove between the Helix and Antihelix
Triangular Fossa (Navicular Fossa)
Triangular “bowl” between Inferior crus and Superior crus of Antihelix

Concha
Shell-shaped valley in center of ear

Superior Concha (Cymba)
Upper “bowl”, above Concha Ridge

Inferior Concha (Cavum)
Lower “bowl”, below concha ridge

Concha Ridge
Raised verticle ridge in center of ear
LM0 toward Antihelix
Concha Wall
The surface leading from the Concha Ridge up to the spine of Antihelix tail
Subtragus (underside)
Underside of tragus
Internal Helix (hidden areas)
Hidden underside of Superior Helix
Darwinian Tubercle (DT)
A protrusion that seperates the Superior Helix from the Helix Tail, generally parallel to tip of Triangular Fossa
Posterior Lobe
Underside of lobe
Posterior Groove
Long, verticle depression corresponding to underside of Antihelix
Posterior Concha
“Bulging” area behind ear between ear’s attachment to head and P.Groove
Posterior Periphery
Posterior aspect of ear stretching from P. Groove and outward
Ear Canal
Opening to ear canal
What are the Master Primary Points?

What is the SC for the Autonomic Point (Sympathetic Point)?
Sedates
(Regulates as well)
What is the SC of the Thalamus Point (Pain Control Point, Codeine Point, Brain Point)?
Pain Control
What is the SC of the Endocrine Point (Internal Secretion)?
Regulates endocrine functions via activating the Pituitary Gland
What is the SC of the Master Oscillation Point (Laterality Point)?
Balances L/R hemisphere in brain
Use for dyslexia, ADD, ADHD
What is the SC of the Allergy Point (Benadril Point)?
Reduces inflammatory/allergic reactions
Tx arthritis, asthma, anaphylactic shock
What is the SC of the Tranquilizer Point (Valium Point, Hypertension 2)?
General sedation, reduces anxiety, lower BP
What is the SC of the Master Sensorial Point (Eye Point)?
Any problem of sensory malfunction
(including XS or def. conditions)
What is the SC of the Master Cerebral Point (Worry Point, Master Omega)?
Reduces fear, worry, psychosomatic disorders, obcessive compulsion
Often useful in cases of chronic pain, anorexia, bulimism
Corresponds tp pre-frontal lobe of brain
Helps with decision making
What does flaky, dry mean?
Deficiency
What does pimple w/ pus mean?
Heat/Damp heat
What does light or white mean?
Chronic problem
What does white pimple with red rim mean?
Acute flare ups of a chronic condition
What does dark or brown mean?
Indicates chronic past condition in which sx’s ARE resolved (can eventually disappear)
What does crescent shaped scar mean?
Site of chronic or old area of injury
(In cludes past surgeries/can be very light)
What does chrysanthemum shape mean?
Can indicate a tumor-like growth in corresponding area
What does “husk-like” mean?
Absorption problems, skin disease
What does “spiders” mean?
May indicate blood stasis in area of body which correspondes to ear map
What does crease in lobe mean?
Possible problems with Heart function
What do Yang Positive Reactions (Y+) indicate?
That a point in the ear is “live” or that a particular condition is or was occuring in the body
They act as “Flags” both for diagnosis & for choosing points for treatment
What are the 2 basic techniques for needling ear points?
Simple insertion
Twisting insertion
Depth = 1-4 mm, 0.5” needle
Quick insertion with EXHALE
How many needles shouldyou use in the ear?
5 needles maximum
When do you NOT needle the ear?
Children under 7
Open wounds/infection in the ear
Patient under the influence of DRUGS or ALCOHOL
Avoid overstimulation in ears of pregnant women
Cautions & precautions?
Be ready with a cotton swab, the ears are very vascular
Do not needle through ear
Avoid needling patients who are overly tired/weak/hungry/full
EAR TX’s ARE STRONG!!!
What take home therapies can you use on the ear?
Pressballs, intradermals, ear seeds, magnets
What Points should you avoid in a pregnant patient?
Endocrine, uterus, ovary, internal secretion, pelvis, abdomen points
What is the Spine, Floor and Wall of the ear?
Spine = The “top of the mountain”
Floor = Flat areas that are at the “bottom”
Wall = Areas that rise up from the floor (walls are often hidden)
