quiz 1 Flashcards
primary vs secondary aging
primary: naturally occurring changes that come with aging
secondary: common conditions and diseases that come with aging
successful aging & WHY
- specific to each person
- all wants and needs are being met
- ability to communicate those wants and needs
- doing daily tasks on own
KNOW THE WHY
3 physical or physiological consequences of primary aging
- decreased muscle mass
- decreased hearing and vision
- memory/cognitive decline
implications for consequences
muscle mass: unable to do things that were once enjoyable; walking, outdoor activities, etc.
hearing/vision: reading and watching tv/books, trouble hearing in social situations: leads to isolation; leads to depression
memory/cognitive: also can lead to isolation, forgetting to do daily tasks, brain fog
communication
sharing of thoughts, ideas, and messages through verbal or non-verbal forms.
we need some type of communication (ASL, AAC, etc) to successfully interact with those around us
how does your future role support communication & participation of the older adult population?
- might work with them on functional, everyday speech
- finding different solutions is speech is not accessible: AAC, sign, etc.
- work with many different populations within the population: stroke patients, aphasia patients, etc.
