quiz #1 Flashcards
SUPERIOR is
towards the head or upper part of a structure
The THORACIC cavity
- superior to the diaphragm
- 2 pleural : L & R lungs
- 1 superior mediastinum; space between 2 pleural cavities that contain organs
- 1 pericardial cavity; contains the heart
DORSAL cavity
is cranial and vertebral; brain and nerve system
VENTRAL cavity
is thoracic and abdominopelvic; contains the internal organs
ANATOMICAL position
Standard body position that serves as the anatomical reference point to describe the body parts
PROXIMAL to
Closest to point of attachment
ex; skeletal muscle is proximal to the bone
CRANIAL cavity
Contains the brain and associated membranes
VERTEBRAL/SPINAL cavity
Contains the spinal cord and its membranes
MEDIAL to
towards the middle of the body
POSTERIOR to
Towards the back of the body
ex; the heel is posterior of the toe
ANTERIOR to
Towards the front of the body
ex; the stomach is anterior t the spine
INFERIOR to
Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure
ex; the chin is inferior to the nose
MEMBRANES
Body membranes that are thin sheets of tissues that line body cavities and cover internal organs within the cavities
Types of membranes
- Parietal membrane (outside wall)
- Visceral membrane ( covers an organ
LUNG membrane
- Parietal pleura : membrane lines the walls of the thoracic cavity
- Visceral pleura : covers the lungs
LATERAL to
towards the side of the body
- Ipsilateral: on the same side
- Contralateral: on the opposite side
Abdominopelvic regions
(middle/center)
From top to bottom:
- Epigastric (upper middle)
- Umbilical (center)
- Hypogastric (lower middle)
TRANSVERSE (cross sectional)
Divides into horizontal superior and inferior parts (top & bottom)
Abdominopelvic regions
(right side)
- R Hypochondriac ( upper right)
- R lumbar ( middle right)
- R iliac/inguinal (lower right)
Frontal/Coronal Plane
Vertical plane dividing sideways anterior and posterior (front & back)
Abdominopelvic cavity
- 2 subcavities below the diaphragm
- abdominal cavity- contains abdominal organs
- pelvic cavity contains urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum
SAGITTAL plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sections
- Midsagittal: divides equally
- Parasagittal: divides unequally
Superficial to
away from the internal portion
Deep
towards the internal position
