Quick table calculations Flashcards
Calculation type: Running Total
Description: Adds totals across the table.
Example: Calculate the cumulative sales for each quarter for several years.
Calculation type: Difference
Description: Calculates the difference from the previous column, across a table.
Example: See how much enrollment values go up or down from semester-to-semester during the course of each academic year.
Calculation type: Percent Difference
Description: Calculates the percent difference from the previous column, across a table.
Example: See how values change, in terms of a percentage, from month-to-month during the course of each year.
Calculation type: Percent of Total
Description: Computes a value as a percentage of all values within the table structure, across a table.
Example: See the percentage that each month’s sales contributes to each year’s total sales.
Calculation type: Rank
Description: Calculates the integer rank of the value across the table.
Example: See how each month within a given year ranks in total sales, from most sales (ranked 1) to least sales (ranked 12).
Calculation type: Percentile
Description: Calculates the statistical percentile of the value across the table.
Example: Determine the percentage of test scores in a frequency distribution. The top test score will have a percentile rank of 100% since it is greater than or equal to 100% of the test scores of people who took the test.
Calculation type: Moving Average
Description: Calculates the average value based on a range around the current value, smoothing short-term fluctuations.
Example: Smooth short-term fluctuations in your sales data so that you can see long-term trends.
Calculation type: YTD Total
Description: Year-to-date total calculates the running total from the beginning of the year across the table.
Example: Calculate a running total for sales per sales quarter across product categories.
Calculation type: YTD Growth
Description: Year-to-date growth calculates a percentage change from the same time period in the previous year and then calculates a running total over a year.
Example: Calculate the percentage growth for sales per sales quarter across product categories.
Calculation type: Compound Growth Rate
Description: Calculates the current value as a percentage from the first value.
Example: Calculate the geometric mean for sales growth by product for two years.
Calculation type: Year Over Year Growth
Description: Calculates a percentage for the current value compared to the same period in the previous year.
Example: Calculate the percentage difference in annual conference attendance from the previous year.
