5
Q

the 2 primary roles of the pharyngeal stage

A
  1. Food passage: propels the bolus thru pharynx, thru the UES, to the oesophagus
  2. Airway protection: ensures food/drink does not enter the larynx, trachea or lungs (i.e. preventing penetration and aspiration)

Q

the primary role of the oesophageal stage

A

to move bolus from UES to stomach for digestion

7
Q

define the lip seal and what stage it is present.

A

when the lips seal around the bolus to prevent anterior spillage of bolus (1st of 4 valves, part of the pressure system) in the Oral Preparatory Stage

Q

define the glossopalatal seal and what stage it is present.

A

tongue and palate contact seals the back of the oral cavity and prevents premature spillage into the pharynx in the Oral Preparatory Stage

Q

define the buccinator press and what stage it is present.

A

cheek tension flattens the cheeks and keeps the bolus within the ‘dental vault’ in the in the Oral Preparatory Stage

Q

define the drop push and what stage it is present.

Q

define BOT to PPW approximation and what stage it is present.

A

Base of tongue retracts and posterior pharyngeal wall moves forwards (BOT to PPW approximation) – this applies positive pressure on bolus, moving it rapidly through the pharynx into oesophagus

Q

define hyolaryngeal excursion and what stage it is present

A

Larynx is drawn upwards and forwards (hyolaryngeal excursion) – helping to create negative pressure in the hypopharynx (below bolus)

Q

define pharyngeal constriction and what stage it is present.

A

As bolus enters the pharynx the pharyngeal constrictor muscles sequentially shorten and narrow the pharynx in the pharyngeal stage.
