Abiotic definition
Biotic definition
Abiotic = the non living aspects. Of an ecosystem
Biotic= The living components of an ecosystem
Three examples of biotic
Four examples of abiotic
Abiotic = water, oxygen, pH of soil, temperature
Biotic= Food, predators, disease
Explain effect a high concentration of insulin has on blood glucose concentration
Blood glucose lowered
Glucose converted to glycogen
By cells
Name one harmful substance that could cause air pollution
Carbon dioxide
Name three harmful substances that could cause water pollution
Fertiliser
Sewage
Toxic chemicals
Describe how substances that pollute air and water could be harmful to humans and other living organisms
Air pollution:
Global warming due to greenhouse gases traps heat leading to floods, loss of habitat
Sulfur dioxide damage to leaves so less photosynthesis
Damage to roots, and lungs
Carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin so less oxygen carried
Particulates cover leaves so less photosynthesis and damage lungs
Water pollution:
In sewage bacteria multiply and use oxygen in respiration
So water animals can’t respire and pathogen in water
Fertiliser so algae multiply and block light so plants can’t photosynthesise
Lack of oxygen for respiration so fish dieplastics entrap animals
Acid rain lowers pH of water damaging fish gills and bleaching coral
Explain why a person with MSUD must have a low protein diet
Proteins contain amino acids
Must keep certain amino acids in a low amount
So toxic substances does not build up in the body and cause damage to cells
Name the process by which water is absorbed into plant roots
Osmosis
Three uses of water in plants
Photosynthesis
Support
Translocation
Why is it more energy efficient to rear cows indoors than to rear cows outdoors
Less energy lost as heat
Less energy lost in movement
Possible disadvantages of rearing cows indoors
Increased spread of disease
Extra cost of heating and lighting
Explain why the decrease in body temperature is an advantage during hibernation
Loses less energy from its body
So body energy store lasts longer
Explain why body temperature increases when you are active
Activity requires energy from respiration
Respiration release heat (which increase body temperature)
Explain how the dilation of blood vessels in the skin can help decrease body temperature
More blood flow near surface
So more heat energy is lost
cools blood which cools the body
Suggest why athletes training in hot climates losing a lot of sweat was advised to take salt tablets each day
To replace ions lost in sweat
