Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Why do you want the job?

A

Several reasons, including:
• I want to challenge myself and I have been inspired by my female colleagues who have recently been successful with promotion.
• I believe in the Police values and Our Business and I like the direction the organisation is going and I want to be part of this leadership group.
• However, as an organisation I believe we are overpromising and under delivering in regards to Our Business and I can assist with meeting these promises. In my current role I am processing files with fingerprint hits dated January 2019. This damages public trust and confidence. I want to turn this around. I want victims to be happy with the service delivered by the NZ Police and I can make more of a difference as a Detective Sergeant.
• I am victim focused and if we are to improve trust and confidence in the New Zealand Police we need to do better. If our focus is to have 10000 less victims and 90% trust and confidence, I can help with this as a Detective Sergeant.
• I want my family to be proud and I want to be a role model for my colleagues and my children.

  • I can lift performance and improve a culture in a group.
  • I am positive in nature. I am a glass half full personality.
  • I genuinely care about people and people know that. I am passionate about the overall well-being of my colleagues, both at work and in general.
  • I find solutions to problems and will make decisions when others cannot.
  • If I don’t know an answer, I am humble enough to ask for help.
  • I am methodical but I think outside the square to come up with solutions.
  • I am victim focused and I do everything I can to ensure every member of public I come in to contact with leaves feeling positive about the New Zealand Police.

Q

Opening Statement

A

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this interview today. I am hopeful that I can effectively demonstrate to you what I have to offer as a Detective Sergeant in the New Zealand Police. I appreciate you, the panel, have a difficult task ahead of you, to choose the next round of DS’s. We are lucky in Christchurch to have such capable and experienced Detectives available to choose from and I am chuffed to be considered one of them.
I am a natural leader. I know that because others have chosen me to lead. I lead at work and I manage my busy home. I have been a netball coach, a netball and Plunket President, and at any one moment, I manage about 5 different sport teams. I love to be social and enjoy my Friday night drinks at home with friends after a busy week.
I am the right pick for this job for several reasons. I am highly competent with excellent organisation and management skills. I have a high level of EQ and relate very well to people. I am motivated to succeed and I am victim focused. I have a strong sense of what is right and wrong and I share the values of the NZ Police. I believe I will make a great Detective Sergeant.

I have the necessary experience to do the job with 15 years in the CIB and 7 of those years on Metro Crime equivalent. I have also worked on the CPT, Warrant squad, Tactical squad, District crime, Crime Control Unit and CJSU/ISU. I have held major roles in homicide investigations including OC File, OC Exhibits, OC Family Liaison and OC Warrants.

33
Q

Describe “enabling our people”.

A

Enabling Others to Act is the behaviour of a confident leader. Leaders who understand the strengths of their colleagues and their potential for more responsibility feel confident in enabling others to take control and initiative. Enabling is a leadership behavior while controlling and directing is a management behavior. When you work as a team, you can see a person’s individual strengths and weaknesses.

34
Q

Why performance management is critical to success

A

Performance management is critical if we are to achieve our goal at being the worlds best Police Service and to be the safest country. Performance management is critical as it will allow leaders to engage our people in better quality conversations about their progress and development so they can help them improve their Performance and Contribution to both Police and the communities they serve.
