A

Writing information to tell you what equipment to use and how to do the job safely.

43
Q

If attaching accessories to a quick-hitch couple, give TWO reason why should the coupler be tilted in the downwards position (ram extended)?

A

The attachment point is near to the dipper bucket pin hole area where the radius for lifting is calculated from. It prevents fouling of the accessories on the couple that could restrict its movement and could cause damage by bending or twisting.

44
Q

If the load inadvertently or accidentally lands, what course of action should be taken?

A

Check the security of the lifting accessories and check the load has not moved or become loose or damaged. Restart the lift as a new lift. Make all the checks you would make on a test lift.

45
Q

If traveling with a load, name FIVE factors that must be taken into account by the operator before moving.

A

The excavator be capable of the lift while traveling. The lift is authorised. The travel route is clear of hazards. Is wide enough. No overhead obstructions. Firm ground without underground services that could be damaged. Banks man. Lift plan in place.

46
Q

On both tracked and wheeled types:

a) What differs between lifting over the side compared to over the front or rear of the machine?

A

To tell you of the hazards that will affect you and tell you what must be done to be protected from the hazards.

51
Q

If the accessory attachment point is not part of the bucket, give TWO reasons why it should be removed.

A

The bucket can get in the way preventing you being able to see clearly and will add unnecessary and unwanted weight to the lift.

52
Q

Why is it important that the bucket/ attachment is lowered and the engine switched off before the operator exits the cab?

A

Leaving the cab with the engine running can cause unwanted and unintentional movement of the machine if the controls are accidently touched.

53
Q

What is the purpose of the counterweight of the machine?

A

It makes the rear of the machine heavier than the front reducing the possibility of overturning when working with the machine.

54
Q

Manufacturers’ lifting or object handling capacity charts apply (in all known cases) when the machine is level. What is the effect if a load is lifted or travelled facing downhill on a downhill slope?

A

If the dipper is facing down the hill any thing you pick up will hang further away from the machine than it should increasing the radius of the lift. This could cause the machine to tip forwards.

55
Q

The safe working load (SWL) or working load limit (WLL) of a multi-leg chain sling only applies in what two conditions or configuration?

A

When each leg is carrying the same weight and the angles between the chains do not exceed 90 degrees/

56
Q

If setting up to excavate in a confined area, name TWO things that should be taken into account before starting.

72
Q

What is the purpose of a Roll or ROPS frame?

A

To give protection to the operator if the machine should overturn (roll over) by preventing crush injury’s.

73
Q

Before manually changing any bucket:

a) where should the bucket be positioned (in relation to the ground) before removing the final pin?
b) Why?

A

Should be placed on the ground so that it cannot fall and cause injury to the operator or damage to things that may be in the area should the bucket roll or move.

74
Q

Which parts of the machine is the radius (for lifting) measured from?

A

From the centre of the slew ring to the vertical line through the centre of the lifting eye on the machine.

75
Q

Why must seatbelt be worn even with the cab door closed?

A

It will keep the operator in his seat if the machine roll over or if there was a violent movement in the machine that could throw the driver around the cab or if the door was open, thrown out of the machine. Wearing it will reduce the injuries that the operator receives.

76
Q

Give FOUR reasons that may cause a machine to tip over forwards and-or sideways.
