Q

How can a constant high blood glucose level lead to obesity?

A

When the glycogen stored in liver and muscles is full, the excess glucose is converted into lipids and stored.
If regular food intake contains more glucose than the amount of it that can be stored as glycogen in liver and muscles, then more and more of it is stored as lipids,
This can eventually lead to obesity.

Q

How does pancreas control blood glucose levels using negative feedback?

A
SECRETES TWO HORMONES.
When blood glucose levels high:
- insulin is secreted.
- glucose is converted into glycogen
- stored in the liver
-glucose removed to supply cellular respiration
- blood glucose level decreases.
When the blood glucose levels low:
- Glucagon is secreted.
- glucagon breaks down glycogen into glucose.
-glucose made from amino acids or fat
- glucose secreted into blood.
- blood glucose levels increase

Q

Why can’t insulin be taken as a tablet?

Q

Compare type 1 and type 2 diabetes

A

Type 1
When pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin.
Treatment is insulin therapy where insulin is injected.
Type 2
Body becomes insulin resistant.
Treatment is a carbohydrate controlled diet and exercise.
Obesity is a risk factor

Q

Why do type 1 diabetes patients feel thirsty all the time?

A

In type 1 diabetes, your blood glucose levels are very high when you eat. So the kidney excretes glucose in urine, you produce lots of urine so you feel thirsty all time.

Q

Why do type 1 diabetes patients lose weight?

A

Without insulin, glucose cannot get your cells in body, so respiration becomes slower, you feel more tired.
This means that you start to breakdown fat and protein as a fuel instead, resulting in weight loss.
