Questions Flashcards
State two ways in which radiation is different from alpha radiation
Gamma is more penetrating than alpha
Gamma is an EM wave and alpha is a helium nucleus
What does contaminated mean
When someone gets particles a radial tube source on or inside their body
State and explain one safety precaution scientists take to minimise the risk of contamination
Wear gloves so they don’t touch the restive source
What describes half life
The time it takes for half of the undefeated nuclei to decay
Old wooden comb, hwk would you work it out
1140 divided by 5700 which equals 2. Then do p.55 x 2 which equals 1.1 . 1.1 x 2 which equals to 2.2
State the meaning of the term stable
When the nuclei doesn’t decay
Number of neutrons in beryllium-9. Atomic numbe is 4 mass number is 9
5
Describe the observations of the experiment
The alpha particles went straight through the foil, some deflected slightly and very few bounced back and were significantly deflected
Using these observations, explain how Rutherford determined his model
Most went straight through. They knew most of the atom was empty space. Some were def, feted light which me at there was a positive charge in it and very few bounced back means that the positive charge was positive
The Bohr model is another model of the spatom. State what Bohr added to the Rutherford Model
Energy levels
Explain how the most model shakes why running an electric current through neon gas created bright light
Because when electrons are excited the em wave electric current on being heated ) they jump energy levels and when they stay they lose the energy they absorbed and fall back down to re,see the energy as the EM waves - usually visible light like the bright light neon gives off
