What is Mania?
Mania is a mood disorder characterised by elevation of mood, rapid thought, rapid speech, extreme over activity and irresponsible behaviour.
What is Cyclothymia?
It is when your mood keeps elevating and plummeting like a roller coaster.
What do Antidepressants do?
Antidepressants are used to treat depression.
- Block neurotransmitter uptake
- Inhibit neurotransmitter breakdown
- Stimulate release of neurotransmitters
- Increase the levels of serotonin
- Effect is within 2 to 3 weeks
Define the term “Anorexia nervosa”?
Anorexia nervosa is an emotional disorder characterised by an obsessive compulsive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat. Eat is an eating disorder or fear of weight gain
Define the term “Bulimia nervosa”?
Bulimia nervosa is an emotional disorder characterised by a distorted body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by fasting or self-induced vomiting or purging.
Briefly describe the assessments conducted on a person suffering from eating disorders.
The assessments a nurse would need to undertake on a client would be:
- psychiatric evaluation
- mental state assessment
- body image assessment
- nutritional assessment
- family assessment
- physical exam
- blood tests run
- cardiac assessment
Describe what an acute stress disorder is
An acute stress disorder is an anxiety disorder characterised by a cluster of dissociative and anxiety symptoms occurring within one month of a traumatic event.
Describe an Adjustment related disorder.
An adjustment related disorder is an abnormal and excessive reaction to an identifiable life stressor. More severe than normally would have been expected.
What is Agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is an extreme or irrational fear of open or public places
What is a Generalised anxiety disorder?
A generalised anxiety disorder is characterised by excessive or disproportionate anxiety about several aspects of life such as work, social relationships or financial matters.
What is Obsessive compulsive disorder?
Obsessive compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repetitive thoughts, feelings, idea sensations or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something.
What is a panic disorder?
A panic disorder is an anxiety disorder that is characterised by sudden attacks of fear and panic.
What is a phobic disorder?
A phobic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterised by extreme and irrational fear of simple things or social situations.
