What is the function of keratin? Where can it be found and where is it produced?
Keratin makes your skin thicker. Found in skin, hair, nails, and teeth. Formed by keratinocytes
What causes the body to sweat and how does it cool the body?
The body sweats when you are emotional and to regulate temperature. When it evaporates it cools the body.
What vitamin does skin produce?
Vitamin D, keeps your bones strong, and helps against sun.
Where is the arrector pili muscle located and what function does it serve?
Pull hair upright when cold or frightened. Found in the base of the hair follicle.
What are the three classes of burns?
Third degree, second degree, and first degree.
What does the rule of nines refer to?
Method used in calculating body surface area involved in burns.
What types of glands are found in skin?
Eccrine (sweat) and apocrine glands
What is the difference in apocrine and eccrine glands?
Apocrine glands are only found in the genital area
What are the short and long term effects of repeated exposure to the sun?
Short term- sunburn and skin damage. Long term- skin cancer
What is melanin, where is it produced, and what functions does it provide for the skin?
Melanin is pigment and it is produced by melanocytes. Melanin provides pigment for the skin.
