What are the 2 inventions that Lisa Abu-Lughod is making into contemporary representation of the veil?
- To develop an appreciation of the differences among women in the world whether it’s different histories, circumstances, structured desires etc.. (To work against the idea that veiling a is typical sign of a women’s unfreedom even if we think otherwise)
- Rather than trying to “save” them we can look into working with them in situations that are subjects to historical transformation and considering our own responsibilities to address the forms of global injustice that are powerful shapers of the world which they find themselves in. (Understanding the real problem and not just focusing on the diverse situation and attitude of million of Muslim women to a single article of clothing)

- violence that occurs in the home between patriarchal parents and children.
- It is used to reinforce the dominator model; in which the authority figure is deemed the ruler over those without power and given the right to remain that rule through practices of subordination, subjugation and submission.
- it is based on the belief that violence allows one to have power over another through violence- domestic violence
- Example; a man who has as job in which he feels useless and powerless in he may want to find that empowerment at home against his partner and/or children through violence.

- They are pressured to feel and act humbled while remain unnoticeable.
What does Kimberlé Crenshaw say about violence against women? What’s her invention into/ major contribution to feminist theory?
- The violence against women in shelters cannot be the only thing that should be addressed; we must also consider other forms of domination that are often present in these women’s lives. (Intersectional approach)
- This hinders their ability to create any other alternatives to the abusive relationships (because their unemployed or underemployed=poor) that brought then to the shelter in the first place.
Describe what Cathy Chen understands as a “transformational politics”. How are the coalitions that Cohen draws different from queer activist?
- Politics that does not search for opportunities to integrate into dominant institutions and normative social relationships, but instead pursue a political agenda that deems to change values, definitions, and laws which make these institution and relationships oppressive.
- most try to promote queer people and teach them to go into these structures that already exist, but Cohen wants to change these roles. Queer activist search for opportunities to fit into dominant institutions and need to look into intersectionality.
How does Tolman use feminist theory to think about desire?
- Comparing how women are oppressed which result in women to lack confidence in showing/expressing their sexual desires because they might be slut shamed for it while men are allowed to show sexual desires freely without much judgement. This is because society shapes the way we express these feelings. Society tells women that it’s bad to show these sexual desires.
What argument does the film waging a living make about minimum wage and welfare? How does this connect to feminism?

- Americans wanted to live the “American dream” but those in poverty remain there for a decade.
- Poverty remains gendered and rationalized.
- Welfar cuts affect mostly women because women of color or single mothers that are poor are deemed as undeserving of welfare.
- Welfare needs to be a right not just if someone is “worthy” and it, everyone should have or be able to have their rights met.

By unclenching the fist came release pain in the phantom limb as you can see the reflection of the good limb relaxing out of the uncomfortable position.

What are the 4 components to rape culture? What does “consent is sexy” mean? Why do feminist use this term?
The 4 components are:
- Gender Socialization- “boys will be boys”
- Patriarchy- unequal relationships and violence against women
- Homophobia- violence against LGBTQ
- Racism & White Supremacy- social construction of men of colour to be deemed as violent
“Consent is sexy” means that through communication, respect, and honesty makes sex and relationships better. To receive or ask for consent means that you respect your partner as well as yourself. Positive views on sex and sexuality are empowering.
Feminist use this to question traditional views about gender and sexuality. This also eliminated the feeling of entitlement over someone your partner; meaning neither your body or sexuality belongs to someone.

- for people with disabilities, being independence is not possible given the certain need they might need in assisted living.
- But cultural construction has altered the meaning of independence to be most valued for and interdependence is looked down upon even though everyone needs help sometime in their lives and it’s should be okay to ask for help. (Shouldn’t be seen has a disempowerment)

- as he is an feminist himself and he wanted to make a sort of hip hop that is not unsafe for traditional alienated groups and not aggressive towards women and/or queers. But it’s aggressive toward those people who are aggressive to these oppressed groups.
