Means “rebirth”, was a time period when many great ideas and things were invented
What is a city state? How did city states avoid from becoming large kingdoms
A city-state consists of a city and a rural area immediatley surrounding it. City states had their own government and armed forces.
Why is a hinterland important to a wealthy city
it provides food and necesities

infant deaths very high, most families large, most families all shared a house with relatives (uncles,aunts,granparents,etc) Children learned their parents work and business

needed drowries because the right marriage would promote the family’s interest. An arranged marriage could lead to divorce, family diffuculties, not actually being in love. In Canda free rights. Renaissance you get no say
What is a sumptuary law
controls consumption, or how people spent their money. The law says you must provide certain amount of courses depending on the social status of your friends

No sumptuary laws. To hard to make, and enforce. We now don’t have to pay for other nobles. We get many rights, marry who we want, vote, our job, and schools.
What did the Medici do to advance the artd in Florence?
they were wealthy, supported art/artists, they began medici tradition of finding and patronizing promising artists.
What makes renaissance art and medieval art different?
renaissance-mostly portaits, and sculptures of people
medieval- this art was painted to capture a moment, or tell a story. (painted pics of kings in a court)
Why were perspective and propotion important to renaissance artists?
Proportion made everything look realistic, and perspective did the same but with a different angle/affect
What might be some diffuculties michealangelo had while painting the ceiling?
getting that high up in a building, making sure the painting looks normal and not deformed since it is curved.

She was a portrait painter, her greates masterpiece Judith slaying Holofernes, was noted for its intensity, and the way the light reflects on the faces
