never quiet- soldiers living in trenches were constantly listening to gunfire, screams, cries, etc
wet/cold- trenches were very wet from rain, blood, overflowing bathrooms. this created muddy and cold conditions
the soldiers hardly slept- having to listen to terrible sounds, being scared and of an attack, and having nightmares
