Q

What is communication and the communication cycle?

A

Communication is the act of giving, recieving and sharing information.

  • The sender is the person who starts the communication process
  • The sender has an idea and feels to share this idea with the recipient – the idea can be a thought, feeling, opinion, or a plan…
  • The sender then creates a message that they intend to send to the recipient
  • With the information created, the sender translates it in a form that can be transmitted to someone else – through the format of a text, video…
  • The sender then chooses the channel of communication to transmit the message - whether that’s through social media or a forum or an email
  • The sender then transmits the message to the receiver
  • The receiver decodes the information received – and crafts a message that the sender will understand
  • Feedback: The receiver will then respond to the message and will send back to the sender

Q

First, what did you find difficult in your experience working in a nursery/SEN school? And how did you deal with it?

A

Nursery/SEN school:
My most challenging aspect working here was temper tantrums, as I am not their parent, I found it quite hard to discipline them but I communicated with them by first actively listening to them and being empathetic. From my experience, children want to be heard and understood. Showing them respect makes them attentive and willing to follow my instructions. I would also ask for help when I needed it which would always help me overcome challenges.

Q

Why do you want to become a speech and language therapist?

A
  • I would love to become an SLT because I simply love working with people of all ages, backgrounds, and unique personalities. I have always enjoyed to do so.
*Another reason why I would love to become a speech and language therapist is because I have recently read in the media that there has been a 10% rise in children who have speech delay in England due to the social restrictions that were placed during covid a few years ago.
  • This has driven my passion to want to be part of that community that support those who do have difficulties.

What drives your passion?

One of the things that drives my passion is caring and helping others. Due to my experiences, I have seen how difficult it can be to communicate and how these difficulties can impact an individuals life. that’s what has made me passionate about speech and language therapy.

Q

What clinical or related experiences have you had and how do you reflect on those, in the context of wanting to be speech and language therapist?
Consider face to face and virtual experiences, things you have read or watched.

A
  • I worked in a nursery for several months.
  • Whilst being at the nursery, I came across many different personalities
  • I had to Adjust my communication style to meet different needs
  • It taught me how to build a relationship with them through communication

*Also having volunteered at an SEN school, assisting in lessons and activities was another great experience for me. These were individuals who had different conditions so I learned how to Understand other individuals viewpoints and to show empathy.

  • I also currently at a refugee centre and although, they may not have had communication difficulties, they come from all around the world into a new country with the struggles of communicating in english, adapting to their environment, and developed mental health disorders. These experiences allowed me to understand how significant communication is especially as these are individuals who are in distressing situations.
  • I have also worked in a care home where I helped those who needed assistance with eating and drinking
  • I would also plan activities, and a lot of them had conditions such as dementia so it allowed me to use the communication skills that I have gained through previous experiences
