Q

How would you handle a situation where you are unable to reach the patient’s location in time to provide care?

A

I understand that providing timely care is of the utmost importance in an ambulance driver role. In the situation where I am unable to reach the patient’s location in time, my first priority would be to assess the current situation and determine what steps can be taken to minimize any potential negative outcomes. This would include contacting emergency service personnel and explaining the situation alongside explaining what has happened to dispatch in order to get support from fellow colleagues. I would then try to get to a patient as soon as possible whilst adhering to safety regulations.

Q

What is your experience with providing first aid?

A

I have experience alongside basic training of First Aid. For example, I had to administer first aid to a neighbour on Christmas Day a few years ago. He is in his 90s and suffered a lapse of unresponsiveness so I had to ensure that his family was calm and I assessed the immediate situation. He looked as though his breathing pattern wasn’t in sink and the situation was worsening and my immediate though was he may have had a heart attack so I rushed for the local AED. Luckily when I got back I treat him for shock and he regained awareness just in time for the paramedics to arrive.

Q

How do you provide compassionate care in the community?

A

I understand that it is pivotal to develop a caring relationship with a patient as this provides the foundations of providing 1st class treatment to the public. With this in mind, I often try to sympathise with members of the public to understand their emotions but also relate with them. Especially within an emergency situation it can be very unnatural and frightening and therefore providing compassion to a patient and their family allows me to reduce their anxiety and show a patient that I care about their wellbeing. This intern allows me to provide the best care possible and treat a patient the way I would want to be treat.

Q

How do you keep yourself safe on the job?

A

I believe It’s very important to always assess the situation for threats and hazards. For example, I begin to formulate a dynamic risk assessment through the use of basic things like the DR ABC code. Once the situation is assessed I would maintain alertness and awareness. However I also believe it’s very important to be practically safe such as being aware of sharp objects or syringes that may be a biohazard or dangerous towards me, my crew and my patient. Wearing proper PPE such as gloves, goggles, masks as needed directly protects myself for things like bodily fluids. I’m thoroughly engaged to follow practices and protocols to protect myself and others.

Q

How do you deal with conflict in the workplace?

A

First of all, I don’t like conflict with peers as is unprofessional and I think it creates unwanted atmosphere. However, if a conflict was to form I believe the best way to overcome a conflict it to talk directly with the person and discuss both of our ideas. Listening to their argument is also crucial in developing a response. When we have done that we can formulate and develop a response that unites us thus depleting and need for an argument

How does the team ensure a smooth handoff to the hospital?

A

I believe it’s incredibly important to communicate effectively with other members of staff both within the hospital and ambulance crew members when discussing a hand off of a patient to the hospital. This contact with the A and E staff allows the patient to be treat immediately with the necessary procedures needed without delay.

Q

Describe a time where you lead a team

A

Within my last job, I was asked to lead fellow colleagues in the maintenance of vehicles that my company used. I took charge in this task, and the experience was quite positive. I believe the biggest success factor was that I tried to emulate a leadership style but adapt my own stance. For example, I portrayed myself in a friendly manner and empathised with colleagues to understand how they feel and with this I adapted a way to feedback information about any defects that the drivers found. I feel this experience has prepared me for any leadership roles I may encounter in the future. I’m competent in my skill set and have no problem teaching and mentoring others. Im a very adaptable person and can work outstandingly in a team or in a leadership role using strategies and key problem solving techniques.

23
Q

Tell me about a big decision you’ve made recently. How did you go about it?

A

One of the biggest decisions I’ve had to make is how I would choose to help in the Pandemic efforts. I always decided that I wanted to help people throughout the pandemic but I wanted to also maintain my own safety. For example, I chose to work as a Test and Trace adviser for the NHS. This ultimately developed my language and communication skills but also gave me a purpose to help others whilst staying reasonably safe. I developed problem solving techniques and strategies around answering questions spontaneously. It also gave me the ability of fast paced and effective note taking. From this I was able to overcome the negative effects of the pandemic and shine positivity on the situation.

24
Q

What has been your biggest achievement to date?

A

One of my biggest achievements to date has been when I organised charity events to benefit different people. For example, I have had sponsored walk raising money for the guide dogs society and also veterans of the second world war. I believe it Imperative to give back to the people that gave their all. From these experiences I had raised over £600 for each charity and I believe it has developed my compassion for others. Im always planning other ways to help charities out.

25
Q

Describe a project where you had to use different leadership styles to reach your goal.

A

I believe that my leadership style aims to provide clear guidance, set expectations and give concise instructions to my team. However, I do understand that not everyone is easily adaptable to style and I learned that particularly from my science project work in school. I was given the task to hold a team together to produce a piece of work under a given time period for the Engineering Development Trust. I adapted my leadership style by talking with associates to assess areas they were particularly good and bad at. From this I assigned tasks that would benefit their personal gains.

26
Q

Tell me about a time when your communication skills improved a situation.

A

When working as a Test and Trace agent during the pandemic I regularly encountered people who were either aggressive or didn’t recognise the importance of keeping the general population safe. For example, one individual made me unnecessarily repeat things to purposely waste time. However, by developing a relationship and adapting my communication skills to specifically highlight the importance of the situation, I was able to create an environment where the individual understood what information I was tasked to give. This overall developed my understanding of how to adapt communication styles with frustrated individuals

27
Q

How do you cope in adversity?

A

To overcome adversity I strive to stay positive and resilient this works through being enthusiastic about a situation. Taking into example a difficult job that I may face, planning out an idea to overcome a problem ultimately gives a way to overcome a problem with more though. I understand that there are times in which this job will be difficult but with resilience I believe I can overcome any problem

28
Q

Give me an example of a challenge you faced in the workplace and tell me how you overcame it.

A

A particular challenge I faced in the workplace was when I had to take on another persons work load after their vehicle had broken down. In order to complete this task I had to balance mine and my Colleagues workloads in the given time I had left before the end of my shift. To overcome this I had to use initiative to design and plan a second route to deliver my workload this involved driving down a totally different way to what was originally planned. I made sure that it was still safe for the size and weight of my vehicle but I successfully managed to deliver both workloads. I think this experience has gave me the initiative to plan a plan B incase something happens such as a road blockage or ideally to create the fastest route to a place that is also the safest

29
Q

Tell me about a time when you showed integrity and professionalism.

A

When I’m my previous job I was given some crates of parcels to deliver however the depot staff made a mistake and only gave me one crate instead of 2. I could have accepted this and just worked half of what was required but to be professional and show integrity I notified the depot staff and my manager and they relocated another crate soon after. I believe honesty is the best policy so in this instance to be professional I made a choice to rectify an unnoticed mistake

30
Q

How do you influence people in a situation with conflicting agendas?

A

I believe it’s important to listen to another persons ideas and even if they conflict with yours work out a pathway to develop a response that coordinates both opinions. An example of when I have done this personally was when I had to communicate information to members of the public over the telephone. A few people had conflicting views to the Covid guidelines but by acting in a professional manner and calming the person down I was able to successfully exchange advice to the member of the public. This overall created a successful discussion and and allowed me to develop my calming approach and maintain commitment to my job

31
Q

Tell me about a time that you made a decision and then changed your mind.

A

One particular day I was delivering goods in Sunderland but the weather wasn’t the best I originally planned a route that I deemed safe to travel. After checking my van over I began my work. However, about 2 hours in the wind picked up and I didn’t deem it safe to continue with my route. I decided to change my mind because I had to travel over a bridge in windy conditions I feared for my safety. Eventually I mapped a route that was equally as fast but a lot safer to travel

32
Q

Describe a situation where you were asked to do something that you’d never attempted previously.

A

Whilst I took it into my own initiative, on Christmas Day 2 years ago a neighbour next door deteriorated and I was asked by his family to administer first aid. Naturally I was a little stressed because I’ve never had to deal with anything as serious as this but I knew I had a job to do. The man is in his 90s and suffered a lapse of unresponsiveness so I had to ensure that his family was calm and I assessed the immediate situation. He looked as though his breathing pattern wasn’t in sink and the situation was worsening and my immediate though was he may have had a heart attack so I rushed for the local AED. Luckily when I got back I treat him for shock and he regained awareness just in time for the paramedics to arrive. This experience overall was quite shocking with not having whitenesses anything like that before but I’m proud my actions had helped the man recover.

33
Q

Tell me about a time when you achieved success even when the odds were stacked against you.

A

When I worked as a test and trace agent I had to contact multiple people from different backgrounds and origins. One in particular problem arose when I had to tell a member of the public to self isolate but there was a language barrier she spoke Kurdish which I had no idea how to speak. Furthermore, communicating over the telephone I couldn’t communicate with hand gestures or pictures like I could face to face. However there was no one that spoke Kurdish nearby. Using problem solving abilities I managed to track down a local translator who got my message across to the lady and overall the outcome was positive. I have a strong mind for using initiative or developing other ideas to overcome problems and I think this experience helped me develop that
