Questionnaires - basic considerations (10)
A
- Collect info in standard format (e.g. standardized questions with means of coding).
- Self-completed vs interviews
- Open ended vs closed questions
- Wording - avoid ambiguity, doublt negatives
- Sequence and structure of questions
- Pilot test
- Confidentiality
- Response rates - total and partial answers
- Reliability (reproducible with same respondent)
- Validity (reflect truth, e.g. can independently verify against existing records, biomarkers etc)

Self completed and mailed questionnaires - advantages (4) and disadvantages (4)

Advantages
- Quick and easy
- Cheap with wide coverage
- Don’t need study personnel to administer
- Avoids interviewer bias
Disadvantages
- Low response rates
- Requires sample frame if mailed
- Reviewing of questions (earlier questions may be revised based on later questions)
- Requires high level of clarity of question

E.g. in person or telephone
Advantages
- More control over questions (e.g. respondent can’t review earlier questions)
- Higher response rate
- Useful for low-literacy populations
Disadvantages
- Potential for interviewer bias
- More logistically difficult and costly (required personnel)
