Questionnaires Flashcards
Practical Strength
They are quick and cheap way to gather large amounts of quantitative data from large amounts of people
Data is easy to quantify and can easily review relationship between variables
Practical weakness
Data is often limited and superficial. This is because questioners need to be fairly brief.
Very low response rate
Theoretical
Reliable as identical questioners are given up to the respondents with the same questions therefore is a standardised measuring instrument and if we find a difference in the answers that respondents give we can assume that the result of the differences between the respondents are not because of the questions, but because of the variable. Allow us to make comparisons and compare results.
Theiretcal issue
Interpretivist argue that questionnaires are detached and this failed to produce a valid data. They lack contact between the researcher and respondents making it almost impossible to clarify what the question means or if the researcher can check if the correct answers were given.
Theoretical issue
Lying forgetting and trying to impress. The validity of the questionnaire data depends on the willingness and ability of respondents to provide full accurate answers. Problems of validity are created when the respondents live figure or do not understand. For example in Schofields research on sexual behaviours of teenagers in a reply to the question. Are you a virgin? one answered “No not yet”.
