list the advantages of questionnaires
- participants are the best observers f their own thoughts and behaviours
- participants are more fascinated with themselves than anyone else
- easy to administrate: cheap, quick, easy to set up, code and analyse
what are the types of questionnaires?
open-ended
close-ended:
- direct: face-valid
- indirect: obscured
what factors does a questionnaire measure need to be ‘good’?
discrimination - people with different scores differ in the construct being measured
content validity - measures what you think it measures
criterion validity - relates to other constructs you think it relates to and doesn’t to those you don’t
factorial validity - certain responses will correlate and become groups of ‘factors’
reliability - produces the same results under the same conditions
what are the sources of bias?
socially desirable responding acquiescent responding (agree with items regardless) careless responding (inattentive)
what are solutions for socially desirable responding?
- avoid making some options more desirable
- use indirect question items
- anonymity
what should you avoid when writing a questionnaire?
- ambiguous terms
- leading questions
- double negatives
