- restricts the amount of detail people can give
- may be necessary to offer prizes to persuade people to complete them
- no way of knowing if the right person filled it in
- low response rate
- only paints a snap shot of a persons feelings at the exact moment

- cannot ensure participants have understood the question, reduces validity
- people may lie or exaggerate, reduces validity
- the imposition problem reduces we validity (imposing own views on the people being questioned)
- questions may be leading, technical or vague, reduces validity
