Question Type Flashcards

1
Q

For Weaken Questions.

The correct answer must fulfill the task of directly weakening the relationship between the premise and the conclusion in the prompt.

What are key indicators of whether an option is on task?

A

The identifiers (domain) of the option must DIRECTLY address the same level/identifier (domain) of the prompt.

For example, the prompt says ‘a dog barked when it was given ten steaks but did not did not bark when it was given one steak.’

An option that says ‘dogs only bark when they are given their favorite food’ would be less relevant as the difference in identifiers lies in the QUANTITY of the food given.

Q

For Strengthen Questions.

The correct answer needs to strengthen the argument in the prompt.

Whether the argument can be proven true by the option is the indicator of the correct answer.

Is this valid?

A

No.

The correct answer only needs to deny plausible alternative hypotheses.

By doing so, they will bolster the plausibility of the original hypotheses-conclusions.
Note that it doesn’t mean that we’ve proved the original hypotheses-conclusions must be true.

That’s too high a standard and we’re not aiming for that. We simply need to make it such that the original hypotheses-conclusions are more likely to be true in the presence of the correct answers than they were prior.
