Question Bank 6 - Stress & Pain Flashcards
What are the 3 McGill Pain Questionnaires?
- Sensory-discriminative (throbbing, gnawing, shooting)
- Motivational-affective (tiring, sickening, fearful)
- Cognitive (no pain, mild, a lot)
Which types of sensory neurons respond to pain?
A delta and C
Traits of A delta fibers:
- Large myelinated axons
2. Register pain quickly
Traits of C fibers:
- Thin unmyelinated axons
2. TRPV1 receptors
What is the Gate Control Theory of Pain?
Spinal “gates” or modulation sites that control the signal that goes to the brain. Inhibitory interneurons present in the spinal cord that inhibit neurons that transmit pain sensation.
What are opioids?
Endorphins/drugs that inhibit activity of inhibitory neurons in the PAG.
Descending pain control pathway starting from PAG.
PAG -> Raphe Magnus -> Spinal interneurons
What are involved in the affective processing of pain?
Insula, ACC, PCC, OFC, mPFC
What is stress analgesia?
A lessening of pain often occurs under acute stress conditions.
