Question 3 - UK Energy Policy Flashcards
Q3) Name the 5 Strategies for Net Zero Strategy ??
Power, Transport, Industry, Buildings and agriculture
Q3A) Discuss the approach on POWER by the Net Zero Strategy (4/5marks)
This strategy wants to deliver a decarbonised power system by 2035
- By 2035, All electricity will come from low carbon sources subject to security of supply
-Accelerate deployment of low-cost renewable generation, such as wind and solar
- Deliver 40GW of offshore wind, including 1GW of innovative floating offshore wind by 2030
-Secure final investment decision on large-scale nuclear plant e.g. a new £120 million Future Nuclear Enabling Fund, retaining options for future nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors.
-Encourage smart systems and energy digitalisation
-Provide £380m for our world-leading offshore wind sector, investing in supply chains, infrastructure and early-coordination of offshore transmission networks, securing jobs and benefitting communities across the UK.
-Deployment of new flexibility measures including storage to help smooth out future price spikes.
Q3B) Discuss the approach on TRANSPORT by the Net Zero Strategy (4/5marks)
This strategy sets the pace for greener and better transport
-Ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030 and phasing out the sale of new diesel heavy goods vehicles by 2040.
-Creating a net zero rail network by 2050, and a net zero domestic aviation sector by 2040.
-Investing in cycling and walking infrastructure and improving public transport services.
-Linking local infrastructure funding to solutions that cut emissions and supporting the transition to green shipping.
Q3C) Discuss the approach on INDUSTRY by the Net Zero Strategy (4/5marks)
A combined total of £7 billion in different support and measures to decarbonise industry
-Support the deployment of CCUS
-Support the installation of energy efficiency and on-site decarbonisation measures
-Support the increased requirement for fuel switching to low carbon alternatives, with an ambition to replace around 50 TWh of fossil fuels per year by 2035.
Q3D) Discuss the approach on BUILDINGS by the Net Zero Strategy (4/5marks)
Focus on decarbonising heat and power of buildings
Making the transition to low carbon buildings affordable and achievable for all by:
-Phasing out the installation of new and replacement natural gas boilers by 2035, replacing with hydrogen ready boilers or heat pumps
- Make heat pumps cheaper to install and operate - Expand heat pump market by supporting 600,000 installations per year by 2028
-£450 Million boiler upgrade scheme to support households with the transition
-Phase out the dirtiest fossil fuels heating firstly
- Help households and businesses to reduce energy bills by making them more thermal efficient and comfortable
Q3E) Discuss the approach on AGRICULTURE by the Net Zero Strategy (4/5marks)
No specific strategy for this industry.
This policy pushes for net zero by 2050, however it accepts that the mean emissions will not drop to absolute zero as certain sectors such as agriculture and aviation is difficult to decarbonise.
-Therefore a focus is put on deploying GGRs (greenhouse gas removals)
-Greenhouse gas removals (GGR), like trees and carbon capture and storage technology, are therefore essential to compensate for the residual emissions arising from these hard to decarbonise sectors, so we can reach net zero by 2050.
