Question 1 Tripartite Model of Human Functioning Flashcards
Plutchik’s Theory
Eight emotions: Joy Disgust Fear Surprise Anger Sadness Acceptance Anticipation
Psychoevolutionary theory of emotions Model to classify and understand emotions
Intensity: easier to define at the top/”equator” (ex: rage) b/c these emotions are very pronounced but at bottom/”South Pole”=hard because mild arousal is harder to distinguish (ex: annoyance) from each other
Similarity: across from each other are the most opposite, close proximity= are similar/related (ex: surprise & fear)
• If cut a cross-section → emotion wheel chart; Mixing the two that are adjacent (=“primary dyads”) will form secondary and tertiary emotions – shown outside the wheel (ex: Joy + Acceptance = Love)
Clore and colleagues – More Emotion, Lexicon article
affective lexicon–presented list of 585 emotions to ppl in the “feeling state” and the “being state” and participants rated whether or not it was an emotion
o Mental, internal states and affect conditions were thought of as emotions
4 broad classes of psychological states/conditions are suggested for taxonomy
o 1. External Conditions (subjective evaluation & objective descriptives)
o 2. Physical & Bodily states (nonmental)
o 3. Cognitive Conditions (Behavioral-cog & Cog)
o 4. Affective (affective, affective-behavioral, affective-cog)
Clearest case of emotions=Affective Conditions
o Clearest NONemotions=physical & bodily states
o :. Taxonomy structure is a good categorization tool for emotion words
Robb - Cognition
6 Different ways for defining Cognition
Good Uses of the term:
1. Cognition as symbolic covert behavior-says cognition is private/covert events). Radical behaviorism allows for private events simultaneous to physiological events.
2. Cognition as symbolic overt behavior- behavior (acting out your thoughts in an observable way, a public thing)
3. Pragmatic convention- they are used to get clients to change behavior, or undertake activities which may not otherwise have been taken, that is expected to be more effective
Bad Uses (spooks)-can’t be measured
- Cognition as a mental event
- Unreportable event – thought that cannot be explained, it is just mental and not empirical
- Hypothetical constructs – fake, religion is a spook
Emotions, thoughts and behaviors do NOT occur in isolation…
The tripartite model demonstrates triadic reciprocal determinism where each (emotions, cognitions, behaviors) affects the other
Your thinking affects choices of action and the emotions you choose to display or that you subsequently feel, in general
Your emotions affect how you think about/perceive things and influence how you carry out certain behaviors
Your behaviors impact your internal thoughts and emotions.
Need to look at all 3 together in order to understand human functioning.
Textbook definition of Emotion
Emotion defined as a complex sequence of events having the elements of
cognitive appraisal
feeling
impulses to an action
overt behavior
*all triggered by a stimulus
