Interrogative pronoun: Lequel replaces quel + noun.

Relative pronoun: Lequel replaces an inanimate object of a preposition. (If the object of the preposition is a person, use qui.)

when to use dont
object of de, indicate possession, of which, from which, that, whose
Le livre dont j’ai besoin
Voici le prof dont j’ai peur
Voici le livre dont je me sers tous les jours

How do you know whether to use dont or duquel? You need dont when the preposition is de by itself. You need duquel when de is part of a prepositional phrase, such as près de, à côté de, en face de, etc.
when to use qui
is the antecedent the subject of the action in the subordinate clause (sub clause = whatever phrase comes after qui or que)?
if the antecedent is the subject, then use qui
Qui also replaces an indirect object referring to a person* after a preposition,** including prepositions which are required after a given verb or expression. (if a thing, you use lequel or dont
Je cherche l’artiste. Il étudie à Paris.
Je cherche l’artiste qui étudie à Paris.
Trouvez le chat. Il habite dans la cave.

when to use que
is the antecedent the direct object of the action in the subordinate clause (sub clause = whatever phrase comes after qui or que)?
for que, the antecedent must be the direct object of the verb in the dependent clause
J’ai acheté le livre. Ma sœur l’a écrit.
J’ai acheté le livre que ma sœur a écrit.
Où habite le peintre ? Je l’ai vu aujourd’hui.
Où habite le peintre que j’ai vu aujourd’hui?
