Q

Why was Elizabeth reluctant to kill Mary?

A
  • She was her cousin
  • Could cause Catholic rebellion
  • Could cause war with Catholic countries from Europe
  • Monarchs were believed to be appointed by God. Killing Mary is arguably going against God’s orders.

21

A

The Armada failed due to bad planning, bad luck and skilful English tactics

22
Q

What was the bad planning that made the Armada fail?

A

The Armada was supposed to pick up troops in the Netherlands and take them to invade England. But communication between the Armada and troops was impossible, so this never happened.

23
Q

Why did the Armada fail due to bad luck?

A

Strong winds drove the Armada Northwards, so that the English could attack.

24
Q

Why did the Armada fail due to skilful English tactics?

A

English vessels changed direction more easily. The English set ships alight and over night they drifted towards Spanish ships, causing them to catch on fire. These ships drove Spanish ships into the open sea. At the battle of Gravelines, English guns were reloaded more quickly.
