What does it mean to annotate? What do you annotate?
Highlight, circle, write on post-it notes, pose questions, etc.
Draw attention to specific words, repetitive words, use of colors, descriptions, sentence structure, and details.
What is analysis?
refers to the careful and close examination of the parts or elements from which something is made and how those parts affect or function within the whole to create meaning
What is diction?
Word choice
What is connotation?
The feeling associated with a word (i.e., the difference between “house” and “home”)
What does it mean if something is explicit or implicit?
Explicit- clearly stated
Implicit- implied statement
What is textual support?
Any specific support from the literature (word, phrase, sentence, paragraph, or longer passage)
How must textual support be cited?
Must be placed in quotation marks and written verbatim from the text
You knew this one was coming…what is an allusion‽
A reference to something in literature, music, pop culture, et al., that helps one to understand the situation
What is a shift?
A change
What is personification?
Giving an inanimate object human-like traits or characteristics
What is irony? Name the three types.
When what is expected turns out to be quite different from what actually happens, or what is said is different than what is expected
Situational irony- contradicts expectations of reader
Verbal irony- speaker/narrator says one thing while meaning another
Dramatic irony- when the reader knows more than the main characters do
What is a complex sentence?
A sentence consisting of an independent clause and a dependent clause
What is a compound sentence? How may we punctuate them?
Two independent clauses linked together by either:
- a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)
- a semicolon
- a semicolon followed by a conjunctive adverb (glue word) followed by a comma
Name the principle parts of the infinitive “to be.”
Am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been
What do dependent clauses begin with?
Subordinate conjunctions

What is a possessive noun?
A noun that shows ownership
How do you show that a singular noun is possessive?
Add an apostrophe and “s”
For example:
- Karen’s boots
- The tornado’s path
How do you show that a singular noun ending in “s” is possessive?
Add an apostrophe and “s,” or just add an apostrophe
For example:
- Chris’s skis
- Mr. Ross’s plight
How do you show that a plural noun ending in “s” is possessive?
Make it plural, and then add an apostrophe
For example:
- The Rosses’ home
- The victims’ losses
How do you show that a plural noun NOT ending in “s” is possessive?
First pluralize, then add an apostrophe and “s”
For example:
- The children’s fears
- The women’s boots
What do you do when possession is shared by more than one noun?
Add an apostrophe and “s” to the last noun in the series
For example:
- VanClumpin, VanDiken, and VanTulip’s air band (all three are members of a band)
- VanClumpin’s, VanDiken’s, and VanTulip’s air guitars (each has an air guitar)
How is the possessive of a compound verb formed?
By placing the possessive ending after the last word (look at the green sheet if you need examples)
How do you form the possessive of an indefinite pronoun?
By placing the apostrophe and “s” on the last word
What is a preposition?
A word used to show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence
What are the parts of a prepositional phrase?
A preposition (duh), its object, and any words describing/modifying the object
The object of the preposition will always be what?
A noun, a pronoun, or a group of words functioning as a noun
